Today we said goodbye to Tokyo and caught the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto, picking up ekiben (bento boxes) for lunch on our train trip.
It was a fast but smooth ride on the Shinkensen to Kyoto and we arrived mid afternoon.
Immediate impressions of Kyoto was how different it was to Tokyo. Still a busy city but no skyscrapers - the Kyoto Tower is the tallest structure in town and a mere drawf compared to Tokyo towers. And in Kyoto, things just seemed a little less crammed! Not to mention, temples and shrines seem to be everywhere - you almost trip over Higashi-Honganji Temple when you step out of Kyoto Station.
We are staying in a cute little apartment in central Kyoto, a few minutes walk from the station.
Despite Miyuki's lessons in supermarket shopping, our local supa in Kyoto was another bewildering experience - we wander around taking a bit of a guess at items we should buy, then returned home to the challenge of cooking dinner with some unfamiliar ingredients in a micro-sized kitchen. Our "pseudo-Japanese" dinner, while nothing like the gourmet feast served up to us by the Mihashi's the day before, hit the spot after a long day travelling.
