Emma wa kimashita Yakyū wa mimashita

Saturday 25 June 2016

Emma's flight arrived at Haneda Airport at 5:30am so I had an early morning trip on the subway and monorail to meet her. Vending machine coffee hit the spot on the train ride back to our accommodation and the family were all pleased to have Em join our holiday!

After breakfast we headed for the walkway beside the Sumida River, stopping off at a local supa for some drinks and snacks (cans of coffee & softdrink and sweet raisin buns). Walking beside the river we enjoyed some interesting sites on our way - The Asahi Beer Tower, beer glass-like tall building, covered with amber glass on its sides and white walls on top is impressive but the adjacent building the "Super Dry Hall" with the golden object called "The Asahi Flame", well what were they thinking!!!!

- to
the Ryogoku, hoping to visit the Sumo Hall (kokugikan) and museum

but ending up instead at the Edo-Tokyo museum.

Museums can be a little dull, but not this one - lots of interesting displays (with English descriptions) on the early shogunate life and times in Edo (now Toyko) and interactive things to do!
A demonstration of acrobatics was amazing to watch as a lady balanced items on the end of long chop sticks and did some juggling. We wished we had more time as we would have arranged for a volunteer guide to show us around (may be next time!).

All aboard the subway again; off to the Meiji Jingu Stadium to watch the Tokyo Yakult Swallows take on the Chunichi Dragons. Baseball is huge in Japan, and sitting in the crowd with the Swallows supporters was heaps of fun and we got right into it - "Go Go Swallows"
They had a song for every player that they chanted when the player was batting - we sang along - and when the Swallows got a home run, not only where there high-fives all round but, the supporters got out little umbrellas and waved them around as they sang another song! What a sight - a lady sitting behind us lent her umbrella so we could join in too! Loads of fun to be part of the crowd cheering for the local team and their star players - "Yamada home run"!

After the big game (the Swallows won 13-9), we headed back to our accommodation in Asakusa via Senso-ji so Em could see this amazing temple. As it was evening our local streets took on quite different night-time look, very beautiful,

and the temple looked amazing!
